Qantas Takes Delivery of Its First Airbus A321XLR

Qantas has officially taken delivery of its first Airbus A321XLR aircraft, marking a significant milestone in the airline’s fleet modernization program. The aircraft, registered VH-OGA and named ‘Great Ocean Road’, was built at Airbus’ facility in Finkenwerder, near Hamburg, Germany, and completed its customer acceptance flight on June 24, 2025.

Following the handover, the aircraft departed Germany on its multi-leg delivery flight to Australia, with a planned stop in Bangkok, Thailand. From the Thai capital, VH-OGA flew an additional 7,600 kilometers to Sydney (SYD), arriving at 09:44 am local time on July 2, 2025.

The A321XLR is the first of 28 aircraft Qantas ordered to replace part of its Boeing 737 fleet gradually. Each aircraft is configured with a two-class cabin, offering 20 Business Class seats and either 177 or 180 Economy Class seats, depending on the route.

Designed for efficiency and long-range performance, the A321XLR allows Qantas to serve domestic routes across Australia and expand into medium-haul international destinations, including Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands. The extended range and lower operating costs of this single-aisle aircraft make it a versatile addition to the Qantas fleet.

The arrival of VH-OGA signals the beginning of a new era for Qantas’ narrowbody operations, enhancing both the passenger experience and the airline’s ability to serve new markets with greater flexibility.

The aircraft’s delivery also marked a significant step in the airline’s commitment to sustainability and modernization, as the A321XLR burns significantly less fuel per seat compared to the older 737s it will replace.
